Palmela

The municipality of Palmela, with 461km2, is the most extensive in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. It is located in a central position of the Setúbal Peninsula, between three of the most important national protected areas - the Arrábida Natural Park (PNA), the Sado Estuary Natural Reserve (RNES) and the Tagus Estuary Natural Reserve (RNET) -, the two estuaries and the mountain range, covering areas of the NAP and RNES (respectively 15.28km2 and 17.01km2).

The areas constituting the fundamental biophysical structure of environmental protection and valorization in the Municipality of Palmela cover 212km2 and include, in addition to the PNA and RNES, the National Ecological Reserve, the National Agricultural Reserve, the Forest Spaces, and the zones already classified as proposals for the establishment of the Natura 2000 network - a set of areas designed to conserve biodiversity in Europe.
