COMPOSE project: Rural communities engaged with positive energy

How does the COMPOSE project contribute to increasing energy efficiency and local development of rural communities

1. Brief description of the project

COMPOSE is a three-year project whose main objective is to increase the contribution of local renewable energy sources to energy strategies and plans in 11 regions of the Mediterranean. By sharing knowledge, experiences and innovative approaches to increase awareness of the importance of energy efficiency, the entities participating in this project will implement 15 pilot actions demonstrating the potential of energy efficiency measures and the introduction of renewable energy sources in communities contribute not only to energy savings, but also to demonstrate the opportunities for developing the measures at local level.

In Portugal, the COMPOSE project is being developed by ENA - Arrábida Energy and Environment Agency, with the support of ADREPES - Setúbal Peninsula Regional Development Association, NPSD - New Products and Digital Systems, as well as the Municipalities of Palmela, Setúbal and Sesimbra.

2. Objectives

  • Increase EE and the use of RES
  • Monitor and transfer the experience gained in these projects to other rural communities
  • Raise awareness among decision-makers, technicians, investors and citizens
  • Improving the quality, attractiveness and competitiveness of rural communities and their territories
  • Contribute to the diversification of the rural economy and the improvement of the quality of life of the population

3. Expected results

  • "Living laboratories" on the energy independence of rural communities and long-term sustainability.
  • Direct involvement of rural entrepreneurs, policymakers and citizens.
  • Technological, pedagogical, financing and business solutions and processes tested and validated for replication in other territories.
  • Awareness, knowledge and motivation of rural communities for innovative aspects of EE procedures and RES technology.
  • Changing behaviors.

4. Investment and support

It represents a total investment of € 2,551,244.00 in the regions covered by the project consortium
